Rānui House

Tony and Mel’s Rānui reflection

Mel and Tony Rippin spent 113 nights at Rānui House and, after returning home to Temuka, wrote to us about their experience. Thank you, Tony and Mel, for sharing with us what Rānui meant to you. We know your journey isn’t over so please know, you will always have a home at Rānui.

“I wanted to share a few words of thanks. It has been hard to write this though – trying to find the right words to reflect our thanks adequately has been hard. The care and support Rānui gave us through treatment, and continues to give us through recovery, has played a critical role in supporting our family.

“Diagnosis and treatment for leukaemia came suddenly. At times it was brutal, but the months that followed were made easier with Rānui’s quiet support. Having somewhere close to rest and recuperate while Mel was being treated, or while recovering between rounds, made a huge difference for us.

“Having to relocate to Christchurch, away from our rural retreat, was a massive dislocation. Rānui’s community dinners and weekly afternoon teas though were a valuable space for us to meet others facing similar issues. Pet therapy was a highlight too. It all helped us to develop a sense of community while we were far from home.

“Mel is still receiving treatment through a clinical trial, so we’re still going to be occasional visitors to Rānui for a year or two yet. But I’m also pleased to add that she has, as of last month, taken the big step of transitioning back to work. Only a couple of hours a day right now, but life is gradually heading toward a semblance of normality.

“Please pass on this thanks to all the team – both paid and voluntary. Your efforts are very much appreciated.”
