At Rānui House, we are dedicated to providing a home-away-from-home for patients and their families during some of the most challenging times in their lives. As we reflect on our impact from January to December 2024, compared to the previous year, we see clear signs of growth – both in the number of families we’ve supported and in the increasing need for our services.
Supporting More Families Than Ever
In 2024, Rānui House accommodated 1,273 patients and their whānau, a significant increase from 1,011 families in 2023. This growth reflects the essential role Rānui House plays in easing the burden for families who must travel for medical treatment.
With this rise in demand, however, came a challenge – full occupancy. 512 families had to be relocated to alternative accommodation for a total of 2,016 bednights, reinforcing the urgent need for additional space, which we met with the opening of Rānui Apartments in November 2024.
Increasing Impact – Nights, Support, and Savings
The number of accommodation nights provided slightly decreased from 8,004 in 2023 to 7,783 in 2024, reflecting shorter average stays (14 nights in 2024 vs. 16 nights in 2023). However, the longest stay in 2024 was 628 nights, a dramatic increase from 388 nights in 2023, showing how vital long-term accommodation is for some families.
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, Rānui House helped save families an estimated $1,400,940 in living costs in 2024, covering essentials like accommodation, parking, and laundry.
Community Support at the Heart of It All
Volunteers continue to be the backbone of Rānui House. In 2024, they contributed 4,579 hours of their time – nearly double the 2,421 hours in 2023. Their dedication brought warmth and care to families, whether through 50 Family Afternoon Teas (up from 49 in 2023) or the 36 Meals from the Heart Dinners (up from 30 in 2023).
Looking Ahead
As the need for Rānui House continues to grow, so does our commitment to ensuring no family faces their journey alone. The opening of Rānui Apartments is a major step in meeting this demand, allowing us to support even more families in the years to come.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our volunteers, donors, and community members who make this possible. Your support changes lives.
