Celebrating Excellence: BMCRT Recognises Top Year 5 Medical Students in Haematology

The Bone Marrow Cancer Research Trust (BMCRT) is proud to announce the recipients of the 2025 Haematology Prize, awarded to Year 5 medical students at Christchurch Hospital. This annual award, part of BMCRT’s mission to enable better outcomes for cancer patients through the funding of world-class research and the fostering of medical education in the field of bone marrow and blood-related cancers, recognises students who show exceptional merit in their studies and ambitions within haematology.

The top three students were identified based on their marks in the 4th and 5th year haematology exams, weighted 25% and 75% respectively. Following this, the finalists were invited to an interview on Wednesday 15 October with the judging panel: Mrs Cilla Glasson, Mrs Emma Davis, Mrs Mandy Kennedy, Dr Barry Hock and Dr Sean MacPherson. Each 20-minute interview provided an opportunity for the judges to hear from the students about their understanding of haematology, their reflections on patient care and their aspirations for the future.

The panel shared that they were deeply impressed by the calibre of all the students, noting their academic excellence, compassion and maturity. With such an exceptional standard, the decision was incredibly difficult. Ultimately, the judges reached a unanimous conclusion to award joint prizes to all three finalists – Brendan Fleming, Henry Eglinton and Holly Bissett in recognition of their outstanding achievements.

Reflecting on what the award means to them, the students expressed their appreciation for BMCRT’s ongoing support:

“We’re honoured to receive this prize and truly value the partnership between the Medical School, Christchurch Hospital and the Bone Marrow Cancer Research Trust. It’s encouraging to see the Trust’s commitment to supporting students who are passionate about haematology and to recognise the importance of collaboration in improving outcomes for patients.”

BMCRT CEO Mandy Kennedy congratulated the recipients, noting, “Each year, we’re inspired by the talent and passion of the next generation of medical professionals. The dedication shown by Brendan, Henry and Holly reflects the bright future of haematology here in Canterbury and beyond.”

BMCRT is proud to continue supporting the development of emerging leaders in medicine and remains committed to advancing research, education and care for patients with blood-related illnesses.
